Deb Dana: The autonomic nervous system has two parts fighter flight and rest and digest. When something freaks us out, when we experience a fright, the nervous system automatically takes us into sympathetic activation fight or flight. This polyvagal theory helps us to see three different phases in the nervous system that we can depend on as a hierarchy. She says it's important for people to know what they're doing if they don't understand their response systems.
