The Origins of Nuclear Fusion

Scientists as I understand it discovered nuclear fusion by thinking about the age of the sun. How did they get to that? It's a beautiful story really. Back in around about 1860 our Lord Kelvin had said he'd sat down to try and work out what the age ofThe sun was. And so he discovered nuclear fusion, the conversion of hydrogen into helium without any detailed understanding of what was going on in the nucleus.
