The History of the Spanish Monarchs

The idea was, at least at the outset, that any human chattel sent back to Spain were prisoners of war who practiced cannibalism. Columbus would insist in his letters that these people were being sent to Europe as much for their own betterment as any profit that might be made from their sale in the slave markets. The Spanish monarchs never really liked this idea and explicitly told Columbus that they would rather that he convert the local people there in the Indies.
