The goings on at court seemed increasingly out of kilter with the priorities and values of the country. Anti popery played into this separation between court and country. Increasingly, parliament began to be seen as a bulwark and restraining force on this potential source of national corruption. James referred to them all laughingly as his trinity of knaves.
