The History of Assyria
Eckhart: Syria is in fact a much older polity. The first evidence for it is actually from the third millennium BCE. It starts as a city state and then morphs into a larger kingdom, ruled by kings. And eventually after going through a number of crises, some of which we might briefly talk about later, metamorphosis into this empire. So this is the long-term story of Syria - shows you that these ideas about the eternally despotic east don't really work when you look at Mesopotamia and Syria.
