The Utilitarian View of Education
i grew up in india, which had a very utilitarian view of education. If i told my parents i wanted to study philosophy, the first question would have been, fine, as long as you can get a job. So our choices were heavily driven by the market. An american liberalots, education is absolutely wonderful, but it has a wide variance in terms of future earnings for the same debt burden. And i think that as a aso participants in e democracy, we should think about that seriously.
