The Basic Physiology of Diarrhea

Diarrhea is defined as having greater than normal number of bowel movements per day. Motility-related causes include hyperthyroidism, diabetic neuropathy, scleroderma, bacterial overgrowth and irritable bowel syndrome. Neoplastic causes of diarrhea are usually due to neuroendocrine tumors. Abstruction, either due to constipation or tumors, can lead to overflow diarrhea in some patients. Osmotic causes are usually malabsorptive or medication-related.
