Caves are very natural in the hills of Judea. The high probability is that whatever land Joseph acquired had a cave on it and this would be a natural thing to be. I have actually visited Palestinian folks in the Jerusalem region who lived in a cave. They had a refrigerator, a television, couches, partitions in the cave so that they could have a bedroom while their house was being built. This is not an unusual thing.
