When more and more ocean water floods a tidal marsh for more and more time, in some cases, the marsh literally rots. The underground roots begin to decompose, and the ground starts to collapse. As marsh grasses rot, they release mephane into the atmosphere, which is am actually a more powerful greenhouse gas than so two. So not only is the marsh dying and the coast losing that protective buffer, but it's also losing its capacity for carbon storage. It used to be something that sequesters carbonbut now it's something that emits greenhouse gases.
