The Importance of Vaccines

In 1906, scientists were able to grow the bacterium pertussis in a lab. This laid the groundwork for trying to make a vaccine. It would take another couple of decades before an effective and reliable pertussis vaccine was available. The quarantini is named after Pearl Kendrick, Grace Eldering, and Loney Gordon. They are three women who worked on disease research full time while earning their PhD at Johns Hopkins.
