The History of Slavery

In Athens, the place of asylum for slaves seems to have been the shrine of Thesius. There are no records of a large-scale Greek slave revolt comparable to those that we see at Rome. If a runaway slave was captured, he was branded with a hot iron upon his return as punishment. Those who lived a particularly brutal existence were the slaves of the silver mines of Laryon and the Pornai, or Brothel prostitutes.
