Underlying both anxiety and depression is avoidance. We avoid our painful thoughts, emotions and actions in the face of them. This creates a dominal effect of greater suffering and larger negative consequences. And so long term, we are less able to cope and less able to problem solve because when we face challenges head on, we hide.
