Drilling to the Moho
The idea came out of a group called the american miscellaneous society. They had to develop brand new deep sea drilling technology in order to do it. To get to the mantle through land, you have to drill maybe 20 miles or more down in the ocean. It's much less but that means scientists would have to go down through two miles of water before they were even started.
