How to Sit as a Magistrates
We'd like to attract younger magistrates in their 20s and 30s because many of the defendants are themselves very young. It would be good for them to see that the bench in front of them included some people of their own age or younger magistrates. Normally it would be a mix of ages on the bench. Ultimately it's about tolerance really and fairness which is the bedrock really of our system. Some 95% of all criminal cases are dealt with in magistrates courts. Most by lay people, ordinary citizens who voluntarily give their time and energy to sit and hear and deal with these cases.
