The Paschal Sacrifice of the Passover
Avote tells the story of how hilel became an intellectual lynch pen in jewish history. The fourteenth of nisan, the day when the paschal lamb was offered, fell on a saturday. And the question was whether the paschal sacrifice could be offered by all of israel on that day. Avote informed us that hilel and shama were the successors of the previous set of zugot of shama and aptalion. Tracte psahim reveals that there was a small period of interim leadership where pharisaic judaism was led by the mysterious and apparently ineffectual individuals known as the sons of betera.
