Theodosia's Letter to Benness and Burr
Pendleton and his second nathaniel penilton arrived 30 minutes later carrying two pistols in a small leather case A doctor remained in their boat ready to treat any wounds. Benness and penilton loaded the pistols and measured the distance that would separate the duelists a full 10 paces burr and hamilton then each chose their weapons and took their positions. Pendleton called out present the signal to fire Hamilton asked for a moment's pause so he could put on his glasses then burr and Hamilton settled into a duelist stance.
