The Importance of Imperial Preference
The money that is going overseas, doesn't necessarily go to the empire, it goes to recent areas of settlement in temperate countries, not into the empire. So on this view then, you don't need the empire and benefits come from investing in meat in Argentina with benefits workers. Of course, the alternative view of Joseph Chamberlain in 1902, remember that date of Hobson, is that you do need it because Germany and the United States had massive internal markets,. much bigger than Britain itself.
