Irenaeus and the Gnostics
The Jewish character, Truffo, is mostly a passive straight man in the play. He suggests that the doctrine of the virgin birth is plagiarized from myths about Zeus. Irenaeus refutes Gnostic teaching by invoking an ignorant secondary God and baseness of matter. The imperfection of mankind is explained through metaphysical necessity rather than original sin expounded by Augustine.
