Around 2,500 of Scotland's roughly 1 million residents were accused and executed for witchcraft between 1590 and 1662. 85% of the accused and executed were women, nearly all of whom were charged with having sex with the devil. Belief in fairies was commonplace in both Sicily and Italy as far back as the early medieval period.
