There is a real battle going on now about how to define these things like freedom democracy, human rights. These patterns are big and complex; they play out differently in different countries. One of the interesting things is that Latin American countries do seem to be converging with the West. They were traditionally quite religious and quite individualistic at the same time. And they're becoming less religious. As in fact, is the United States. There are complexities within this pattern.
Despite cosying up with Russia and accusing America of trying to topple him, the newly re-elected president now appears to be flirting with old allies. But there is reason to be sceptical.
