I was a bit surprised at the degree of violence and cruelty outside the battlefield, like off the battlefield. I'm not that naive of studied warfare for a long time, but I didn't expect that. And then on the Russian side, of course, because the nature of the war was more extreme than some of the previous campaigns. You had the Gondar maids depriving the peasants of all their food and stealing everything from them to feed themselves.
