The Problem With Psychotherapy Outcome Research

Depression and anxiety are the psychic equivalents of fever. They're nonspecific responses to an enormous range of underlying psychological difficulties. With precious few exceptions, there's either no follow-up or if there's a follow-up, you know, six months seems kind of typical. I'm not interested in psychotherapy outcome measured on the day therapy ends. And I'm not even that interested in psychotherapeutic outcome measured after 6 months. It doesn't even tell us whether real psychological change has taken place.
