Metals Are Like Legos

There are 116 fundamental elements, the top 15 or so mostly are man-made or lived. All the elements have spectacularly different properties which is intrinsic to their nature. I had thought always in terms of longevity, stretching time. How can I buy as much time as possible? And my problem with soft commodities was that I was thinking that they diminish faster.
