How much blame for the opid crisis do you think lies at the door of the sackler family? Might things have been different had they behaved differently? It's a great question. I think that the sacklers in pedu played a special role in the sense that oxiconton was really the first it was the drug that changed the way in which these drugs were prescribed. And i don't necessarily mean to suggest that they should have hit the brakes and said, we're going to take the drug off the market,. but i do think that a little bit of self reflection at that point is important.
How did one family become associated with an epidemic of drug addiction that has caused the death of almost half a million people?
In this episode, award-winning writer and author of Empire of Pain, Patrick Radden Keefe speaks to Hannah Kuchler, the FT’s global pharmaceutical correspondent about how he uncovered fresh material on the Sacklers and discovered a modern parable of greed, corruption and cynical philanthropy.
