New York's Jewish History

During the gilded age, congregations were growing rapidly. A big part of that growth involved new jewish immigrants from russia and eastern europe. With greater numbers came greater visibility for those older jewish families who had little in common with these new yiddish speaking immigrants. Other changes in the twentieth cen ry crept closer to emanuel's fifth avenue doorstep. By 19 o four, the heart of the broadway theatre district had arrived at the cross road of forty second street and seventh avenue. In other words, it was all getting very noisy and neither very respectful nor very respectable.
