The Importance of Taiwan to China

The decline of the Chinese Empire in the 19th century started in 1840 when Britain launched an open war against China. Between 1895 to 1949, Taiwan was not only occupied by Japan, Taiwan was actually part of the Japanese Empire. And in Taiwan, Japan forced the local people, Chinese, to abandon their Chinese culture. They had to adopt the Japanese names. It would be interesting for our audience to hear a little bit from you about why Taiwan is of such importance to China.
