Aristotle's Zooology
Aristotle was the first person to take seriously the study of animals as an intellectual endeavour. His writings contained descriptions of over 500 different animals. Aristotle must have made some of these observations personally, and he seems especially familiar with many species of fish. It's speculated that Aristotle dissected or witnessed the dissection of an elephant though how this would have been feasible in ancient Greece is unknown.
