The Great Reconstruction of Chicago
Property damages estimated at more than 200 million or more than four billion dollars in today's money Tens of thousands of people were financially ruined. Two-thirds of the city's commercial property was still standing along with two-thirds of its homes. The fire had done nothing to change the city's ideal location near the great lakes or its status as a hub for the nation's railroads Chicago's leading businessman and boosters launched a propaganda campaign to attract much needed investments.
