The Dark Side of Patriotism Is Nationalism
Yesnorwell is explicit about this. The dark side of patriotism is nationalism in the sense of a chauvinistic attachment to the group and the group's status at the expense of that of other groups. That's where one thing gets turned into the other. And so it's not just our status consciousness, the maritocracy and all those things, they actually have to have a weird interaction with our desire for the good. I'm not sure how we could prescribe a prevention system to keep us away from titalitarianism because it's such an insidious thing.
