Social Democracy and the Welfare State in Western Europe
I think it's very hard to attribute the origins of electoral democracy to the working class. Those are two quite different kinds of questions. And finally, there's the question of kind of Christian democracy, that was a huge part of constructing the welfare state in Western Europe. There's no reason to hide that fact. So we need to really think carefully about the relationship between Keynesian policies, social democracy, and working class policies. They don't always go together smoothly.
