Many people have what we call religious beliefs, in religious practices. The usual explanation for the practices is that they are based on beliefs. But this theory doesn't make sensibal lot of political behavior. We're actually remarkably emotional and gullable. In politics, we have strong preferences to be around people who share our political views. Remarkably, when we choose particular politicians, we care a lot about the positions they take - even though it has no influence over their policies.
