The Potato Was Good Food in Ireland in 1845, 1846, 1847.

Before the famine, before the fungus, and when the potato did not fail, the potato was good food. The trouble is that about a third of the population consumed virtually nothing else. And when the potato failed, there was no food then you could trade down to. Like in other cases where there were famines, people might be depending on say wheat or rye. But that was not a possibility in Ireland in 1845, 1846, 1847.
