Rastafari Music in Jamaica

Marley was by far the most famous Jamaican musician to weave these themes into his work. Don Drummond for instance released songs called Marcus Garvey and Addis Ababa. The growth of Rastafari through music in some ways heightened tensions between this religious minority and the mainstream. Marley's spiritual and musical crusade was answered with more literal weapons, he was victim of an assassination attempt when his home was shot up in 1976.
