effective altruism is not comprehensively some sort of like scam by the wealthy. It's more of an honest theory about how charitable giving ought to work that has been adopted by the hyper wealthy. The kind of help that you would render to somebody who's been hit by a car in front of your house is very different and requires really different resources than the kind of help you would give people in, say, Syria.
