Robert Mondavi's parents, Cesare and Rosa Mondavi were Italian immigrants. The family moved to California after prohibition ended when it was legal to make wine. He bought 12 acres of land in the heart of Napa Valley that he'd been buying grapes for. Started to build a winery his first year with $50,000 borrowed from friends.
