Fiat Money, You May Pay Your Taxes With Money

In the good old days, there was gold coins. That was the basic money which is in some sense backed by itself. Then there were notes, pieces of paper. There's an explicit promise that this paper money, you can have something of real value. But it is backed, in fact, by the government's taxes. So effectively, that's what fiscal theory is about. Our money says its fiat, but really is backed by the need to get some, by taxes.
