Is Affirmation Really a Clinical Skill?
The idea of affirming something in a client, the therapist taking it on themselves to say, you are really good at this, or, um, I am so moved by your strength in this area. It involves both noticing and commenting on a person's strengths, positive actions and attributes. But see, here's the thing. Narrative therapists are weary of affirmation, right? And I have heard it referred to as cheerleading.
