The Sign Language of the First Nations

Handtalk is a visual language that existed long before American Sign Language, ISL. By the late 1800s it became colonised along with their culture and customs. Melanie McKay Coady and Lanny Realberg are just two of the few remaining descendants of Indigenous Americans who still use and educate about sign languages. In 1602 a survey of Cornwall recorded that a servant Edward Bowne conversed with his friend in sign language.
