We get more than 85% of our energy from coal, oil and natural gas. We're not very good at using that heat energy efficiently, especially when it is being used to generate electricity. Even the latest state-of-the-art high-efficiency gas-fired electric power plants only achieve 64% thermal efficiency. Less than half the energy released by burning fossil fuels in any engine is used to propel the vehicle.
