Deborah was intrigued by the many ways people understood and misunderstood each other. One thanksgiving, she decided to do some research by recording a conversation with friends. She found that it was difficult for the californians to get the floor. The new yorkers sense of how long a pause was normal was shorter. And so while they were just waiting for a normal pause so that they could come in, one of them would gethe sense, oh, you know, they have nothing to say.
