Psychologist Lisa feldman barrett says there are only a few basic emotional experiences that we can interpret. And so you might experience a high intensity negative emotion, but it's up to you to label that fear or anxiety and reframe it as something positively. A former doctoral student of ours, alison wood brooks, did her dissertation on the idea that calming down is much less efective when you're afraid than telling yourself you're excited.
