Swami Vivekananda's lecture tours drew curiosity and interest, but also some hostility. He described himself as a much reviled preacher in the United States. In 1897 he wrote to one of his American students: "I don't think it is surprising that Americans would meet their first Hindu like religious leader and be racist"
