The word fairy had a very broad sense in Elizabethan England. It could refer to a goblin or gnome, or a figure with a human appearance. In the north and in Scotland, people referred to similar types of fairies as brownies. Another common name for that fairy was Robin Goodfellow. And if you're a fan of Shakespeare, some of these names are probably ringing a bell.
