All the methyl isocyanate used in the Bhopal plant was manufactured in the good old US of A. The site where the plant was constructed had only been zoned for light industry and commercial use, not for manufacturing toxic chemical gas. By the late 1970s, financial pressure from competition led Union Carbide to decide they should start manufacturing MIC in Bhopal. They called the process of refitting their plant to manufacture the raw materials and final product backward integration.
