John colter was the first white man to see yellowstone. He travelled through it in 18 o six and returned with fantastic stories of one region, an inferno of hot springs and boiling geysers that would earn the name colter's hell. The northern pacific railroad planned to expand west from the dakota territory through the montana territory. They needed money fast so they could begin work on a second transcontinental railroad. If this didn't happen, by the end of 18 70, the railroad approval would expire.
