Prisoners in the Palestine Concentration Camps
The camps had a thousand meaningless little rules, like being mustered each morning so that their uniforms could be inspected for good order or missin missing pieces. They would be required to perform pointless, repetitive tasks like digging a hole all day, only to be told to fill it up in the evening. The point was to establish your dominance, to slowly, but surely force the prisoner to dehumanize himself and recognize the utter futility of tance. And if somebody did resist, you wanted the prisoner to hate that person for bringing you down on him.
