CHAPTER

The Importance of Long Term Thinking in Energy Policy

The report says we need to be careful about solutions that appear very attractive in the near term but perhaps not moving in parallel. The reintroduction of coal into the energy mix is a challenge because it is accessible, it is low cost and technology burdens are not there. Here is where I have some optimism as well because when we think of one of the key responses to the curtailment of Russian gas which is essentially gas moving from the east to the west of Europe. We have seen an accelerated response in terms of bringing LNG into the European system. That can mean that infrastructure that might have taken two or three years to be established has been put in within 12, 14 months.
