Poland and the Entente in the First World War
Poland at the end of the First World War is regarded by the Entente as an ally. In Poland, you have an overlap of the principle that was announced, National Self-Determination. But also France wants Poland to exist because France wants an ally to the east of Germany. So those two things come together this time, principle and practice in the creation of Poland. And when I tell the story of the 20s and 30s, it's really these two currents which are going to be alternating in power but very much like today.
