There are other parallel versions of the tora that are slightly different from the mazaretic text, and the most significant of them is the samaritan text. So digging into the bible and figuring out when and where it was written is a highly complicated process That involves picking apart and debating what particular a lines came from where. And you have to look at both the content of the different passages of the bible and their language and their style in order to do this kind of historical, archaeological guesswork.
