Killer Whale Matriarchs - What's the Cost?

Scientists have uncovered the evolutionary cost and benefit of the extremely close bond between an orca mother and her son. If she's taking care of a son just one son her chances of reproducing in a given year dropped by about a half. We don't see these same effects with daughters at all. It doesn't seem to have a negative impact on mothers' reproductive success.
